Light interception
Green turgid leaves are needed for photosynthesis. The percentage of the soil covered with green leaves is used to estimate or calculate the production of a crop.
If only a certain percentage of the soil is covered with functioning leaves, only this percentage of the incomming light is used for photosynthesis.
