Natural ventilated stores
Principles
The basic principles that are used in a natural ventilated stores are:
- that the incoming heat in the store from solar irradiation is restricted to a minimum and is
removed from the store by ventilation
- the surplus of field heat of the potatoes is removed soonest
- that the heat produced in the respiration process of the potato is removed by ventilation
- measures are taken to improve the stack ventilation (e.g. restricted piling height, pile not covered with airtide material, slatted floor, little adhering soil)
Ventilation of the structure
The main heat source is the solar radiation. The temperature in the store can be kept at the average day / night temperature (T.av) if the structure is well ventilated and protected from the influence of the direct solar irradiation.

Ventilation of the stack
With a proper ventilation excess of moisture as well as the excess of heat in a potato pile, stack, crate or bag can be removed.

Examples
Store - Yemen
An example of a natural ventilated store is given.
Drawing natural ventilated store===Photo natural ventilated store
The store has 6 bins and the potatoes can be stacked in bulk, sacks or in crates. In the walls there are ventilation openings (large at the upper part of the wall and small at the lower part). The ventilation openings are screened with a dense mashed (mosquito)netting. Inside the building there are ducts, connected to the lower ventilation openings, to facilitate the ventilation of the potato stacks in the bins. The building is white painted.
