Environmentally friendly

The way in which potatoes are grown depends on the climate and the type of soil available.

Also very important, however, are the consumers' preferences. Consumers are paying ever more attention to the environmental conditions under which potatoes are grown. Today's consumers want potatoes that have been grown according to environmentally‑friendly methods. That is why more and more Dutch potato growers are starting to use integrated or biological cultivation methods.

In integrated cultivation, the growers minimise the use of fertilisers and crop protection products and use only those that affect the environment as little as possible.

Potato breeders are constantly searching for new varieties that are resistant to disease,' and pests. And growers, traders and researchers keep developing ever better cultivatio and storage methods. Growers who practice biological or ecological cultivation use no chemical fertilisers or control agents whatsoever.

It is interesting to note that the Dutch potato growers, traders and producers have, on their own initiative, made agreements to use even smaller amounts of fertilisers and cro protection products.

Biologically‑grown potatoes are recognisable by a special EKO logo. Skal, an inspectio organisation appointed by the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries, checks that the potatoes bearing this logo have been grown in accordance with the statutory biological production requirements.
